Question: How can Chiropractic care help headaches?
Dr. Anthony: Think there’s just ‘regular’ headaches or ‘migraine’ headaches? Think again! We can feel our head aching, pounding, throbbing, or stabbing from multiple causes:
- Tension headaches
- Migraine headaches
- Hypoglycemic headaches
- Menstrual (hormone) headaches
- Cluster headaches
- Sinus headaches
- Cervicogenic headaches
- Caffeine-withdrawal (or other chemical withdrawal) headaches
Chiropractic care is especially effective treating Cluster, Migraine, Tension, Menstrual and Cervicogenic headaches. The cause of these are a mix of an overactive nervous system (the fight-or-flight response), tight muscles, and/or reduced blood flow to the brain- Chiropractic care can help all three of these problems! It is a safe tool with extremely small risk of irritation or side effects. Chiropractic care can directly address the source of your headache–blood flow, nerve irritation, or muscle tension. Research strongly supports gentle chiropractic manipulation for Migraine & Cervicogenic type headaches. Tension headaches respond best to muscle & nerve mobilization. Cluster headaches are best treated by removing triggers (alcohol, sleep, diet) and adding gentle care.
If you experience headache symptoms and hope to avoid the risks of medication or want to remove the cause of your pain–Chiropractic care is a great option. For the great majority of patients, you should see improvement within a few visits and seek increasing independence from care. Constant “Wellness care” is not an optimal outcome and should not be expected for almost all patients.
