Chiropractic Care for Babies

Chiropractic Care for Babies.

Our 2nd son is already 2 months old, and as I experience being a new parent again, I recognize the anxiety bundled with our new gift.  One question new parents ask me is ‘Does my child need to be treated by a Chiropractor?’  Like most intelligent questions, the answer depends on many factors.
Does every child need to be treated by a chiropractor after the ‘trauma’ of birth?
No.  I would suggest only seeking care when you see or feel there is something to be improved.  (eg posture, movement, digestion)
Does my child need regular chiropractic care to grow healthy and strong?
No.  Just like adults, all babies do not need constant chiropractic care.  There is little evidence regular ‘maintenance’ care provides disease reduction or increased longevity.  But, if you have a symptom that is bothering you, Chiropractic care can be an awesome, side-effect free option.
How young is too young for a chiropractic visit?
I have treated many children in our office, ranging from a few days old through the school age–safely and effectively.  I have treated both of my boys within 3 hours of their birth.  For a well-trained chiropractor, no age is too early for helpful treatment.
What types of reasons should I take my child to a chiropractor?
Chiropractic care can be extremely helpful in posture or muscle challenges after birth, such as torticollis or assymetrical head turning.  It can help with digestive and defecating reflexes.  I have used my expertise to help babies with latching problems, pooping problems, regurgitation, and inner ear infections.  I offer a personal plea that before you try tubes for inner ear infections–please find a great chiropractor and see if they can help.  We sometimes meet young ones only after they have gone through multiple rounds of antibiotics with significant side effects.  It would be optimal to see them at the onset of inner ear congestion.
There are far more questions than I will cover in this short blog–but I encourage you to reject pressure that EVERY child has to see a chiropractor, while valuing the wonderful ways treatment might help your child have a great head start on healthful living.
